The Cistercian monastery in Plasy was founded in 1144 and attained its present monumental form in the Baroque period. To overcome the perils of the boggy construction site, the monastery buildings were erected on 5,100 oak piles. To this day, the ground water is maintained on a safe level by means of an ingenious system of underground galleries and basins. Among the other noteworthy sights of the town are an early-Gothic chapel, now part of a granary, or Count Metternich´s vault.
