Černouhelná Bašta

The local mining began before the Thirty Years’ War and the second great boom began in the second half of the 18thcentury. The mining activities in the area betwen the townlets of Stupno and Vranovice was concentrated in the so-called Břasy Coal Basin over an area of just 2 sq. km for almost two centuries. Coal was mined in adits at greater depths using the so-called Břasy method. The method consisted of successive mining from the bottom up in layers. The excavated area was filled up founded with gangue, on which the workers stood and mined the next, higher level.

Coal was still being mined here, in the Kliment Mine, as late as 1965. As early as 1972, a natural monument of 0.06 hectares was created here. And what interesting things can you see here? Under the shelter, you can see a 460 cm thick seam of black coal. At first glance, it is noticeable that the seam is located not very deep below the surface, separated from the surface only by a thin layer of grey clay with small boulders. This was a typical feature of the Radnice Basin, where the overburden was weak at the edges and the seams were rising directly to the surface.
