Čertovo jezero (Devil’s Lake)

All 8 lakes in Bohemian Forest (5 on the Czech side and 3 on the Bavarian side) are of glacial origin. At the end of the Tertiary period, snow avalanches formed glaciers on the hillsides during the cooling of the climate. Then the melting glaciers pushed huge amounts of rock and gravel in front of them, which formed massive moraine dykes under the slopes to hold back the meltwater. Today, the lakes are fed by underground springs and external tributaries

How does one get to the lake?

Pedestrians: Take the yellow-marked trail from Špičák; this route is 3.5 km long.

Pedestrians and cyclists: Take the blue-marked trail from Železná Ruda (a few steps behind the petrol station turn to the woods), after 2.5 km turn to the red-marked trail at the Adolf Kašpar and go on for another 3 km. This route is ca 5 km long.

Cyclists can return via Bumbálka and around Devil’s Cabin to Špičák and Železná Ruda (5.5 km). Pedestrians can follow the red-marked trail to Černé Lake or the yellow-marked trail to Špičák.
