The Bolevec Pond Dam
A lot could be written about the pond, but we will be interested in this text in the area of its monumental dam, which is 250 metres long, 8–10 metres wide at its crown, and 12 metres high. At its eastern end, the original drainage adit has been preserved. There are also old summer oaks growing on the dam. Three of them are over 400 years old and have been Protected Natural Monuments since 1987.
The Baroque Fishery and historical bay for ice extraction
Another great attraction is the building built right on the dam. The building is sometimes called Rybárna (the Fishery).Originally it was the dwelling of the municipal gamekeeper, who managed the surrounding ponds and forests. It was probably also used as a base for hunting by the Pilsen municipal officials and VIPs. The core of the building is late Baroque, probably from the middle of the 18th century. The interesting building was expertly renovated in 1997. It now serves as the headquarters of the Municipal Forestry Department of the Pilsen Public Estate Administration.
In front of the building, there is now an information board from which you can learn in detail everything interesting that is connected to the Great Bolevec Pond and the area of its dam. For example, the fact that from the 1870s, there used to be an area used by the Pilsen Municipal Brewery to extract ice for the brewery cellars by the dam, which served its successors until 1987. In 1883–1884, a siding was brought here from the Žatec railway and a loading ramp was built. In 1942, a special ice conveyor was installed on the embankment by the siding, which was removed in 1994. Today, the whole area is used for recreational purposes only.
