It is no coincidence that Vilém Kurz, the chairman of the Národní jednota Pošumavská (National Union of the Šumava Region), was one of the co-founders of the Klub českých turistů (Czech Tourist Club) at the end of the 19th century. Thanks to him and his enthusiastic followers, the Pilsen Region can now offer dozens of beautiful hiking trails, and not only in the Šumava.

The Pilgrimage Site of St. Anne near Pořejov

South of Tachov, in places where few people ever go, lie the remains of the vanished village of Pořejov. The only visible remnant of it is the pilgrimage church of St. Anne on the hill above it. And rumour has it that this pilgrimage site has magical powers.

Vanished Villages

As soon as World War II ended, more than 50 German villages and settlements in the Czech border region of Domažlice disappeared as their inhabitants were evicted. The localities that were close to the state border were systematically demolished after the border no-access zone was declared and the Iron Curtain was lowered.
